About
A pioneering percussionist and bandleader of Puerto Rican heritage, he electrified the American music scene with hits like “El Watusi” and later became a key figure in the boogaloo and salsa movements of the late 1960s. Renowned for his mastery of the descarga, he joined the Fania All‑Stars and released successful tracks such as “Cocinando” and “Indestructible” throughout the 1970s, culminating with the 1990 album “Soy Dichoso.” After forming the New World Spirit jazz ensemble, he continued touring and recording until his passing in 2006, leaving a legacy that influenced both traditional son cubano and modern Latin jazz.
