About

Born: June 20, 1819 in Cologne Died: October 5, 1880

Born in Germany and later naturalised in France, this composer and cellist left an indelible mark on the operetta scene with almost a hundred works produced between the 1850s and 1870s, while also attempting the ambitious opera The Tales of Hoffmann. His vibrant melodies and theatrical flair shaped the next generation of operetta masters, including Franz von Suppé, Johann Strauss II and Arthur Sullivan. Even today, his celebrated pieces are regularly revived on stage, and The Tales of Hoffmann remains a staple of the modern opera repertoire.
