About

From: Dominican Republic

In the early 1960s, a pivotal moment in the development of salsa music unfolded in New York City's vibrant Latin community. Dominican-born musician Johnny Pacheco joined forces with Jerry Masucci to launch Fania Records in 1964, paving the way for the label to become a driving force behind the genre. Over the next 15 years, Fania Records would go on to shape the sound, culture, and language of salsa music, filling a void left by the unavailability of Cuban music in the US.
