From the Pentagon to Congress: Berney Flowers on Security, the Border & Maryland’s District 3

From the Pentagon and national-security world to the campaign trail in Maryland, Berney Flowers says his experience inside government is a major reason he decided to run for Congress.

On this episode of Campaign Trail: The Road to Congress, host Todd M. Schoenberger, CEO of CrossCheck Media Inc., sits down with Berney Flowers, the Republican nominee for Maryland's 3rd Congressional District. Maryland's official primary results show Flowers won a four-candidate Republican contest with 48.92% of the vote, and he now faces Democratic nominee Sarah Elfreth in the general election.

The conversation begins with Flowers' background. Schoenberger discusses Flowers' experience at the Pentagon, his work involving Cyber Command and NORAD, and asks why someone with that résumé would leave the sidelines and enter congressional politics. Flowers says his experiences inside government gave him a different perspective on the country's direction and motivated his decision to run.

The discussion then turns to immigration and border security. Flowers describes concerns about the vetting of people admitted to the United States and argues for stronger background checks while distinguishing illegal entry from immigration through legal channels. Those are Flowers' stated positions in the interview, not independently established findings by the program.

Flowers also discusses his approach to campaigning in Maryland, telling Todd that he is "not your daddy's Republican" and describing his appearance at WCBM's Freedom Fest. Later, he talks about meeting voters at the Anne Arundel County Fair and explains how his experience in immigration, cybersecurity and military affairs has led to appearances as a television commentator.

It's a wide-ranging conversation about national security, immigration, Maryland politics and the experiences Flowers says he would bring to Congress as voters prepare to choose their next representative from Maryland's 3rd District.
