Board decision had so angered Southside Virginia political leaders that they formed the white supremacist group “The Defenders of State Sovereignty and Individual Liberty.” Their ultimate goal was to defeat public school integration. Most Virginians wanted to move past the segregation crisis that had roiled the state for years, but the Defenders decided to make one last stand.
