por Bertrand Russell
"This book is not addressed to the learned, or to those who regard a practical problem merely as something to be talked about. No profound philosophy or deep erudition will be found in the following pages. I have aimed only at putting together some remarks which are inspired by what I hope is common sense." Bertrand Russell opens the preface with this statement of the intended audience, goals, and writing style of The Conquest of Happiness. The "recipes," as he calls this collection of personal anecdotes, self-reflection, and advice, are written as a wise mentor or elder might share them. As I previewed the text to understand the book's character and how it wanted to be read, it revealed itself to me as a forerunner of the modern self-help genre. Russell was an academic, philosopher, and mathematician who set out to write this in an accessible, commonsensical style. Published in 1930, this book contains outdated generalizations that are unmistakable products of its time, and the 21st Century listener or reader may find the characterizations of gender, cultural, and class roles pretentious, tone-deaf, dismissive, and awkward. Yet, many of the observations of human nature and causes of unhappiness and happiness are profoundly relevant today: attention-culture, comparing ourselves to our peers, seeking chronic stimulation, aversion to boredom, and conflating constant excitement with happiness. The central thesis of the work gradually reveals itself: Self-absorption and preoccupation are causes of unhappiness. While happiness does come from within, the happy person cultivates it through directing their attention outwards, joyful engagement with the people and world around them, and hobbies and interests as sanctuary against inevitable losses and setbacks. As Russell observes, “to be happy in this world, especially when youth is past, it is necessary to feel oneself not merely an isolated individual whose day will soon be over, but part of the stream of life.” I hope The Conquest of Happiness positively shapes your perspective and journey. - Summary by Bryan Travis
