The uncle spent the rest of his life as the family punchline — the man who swore a monster lived in the lake — and took the ridicule to his grave. Now the boy is grown, tongs in hand at the family cookout, grilling burgers and franks at that same water's edge and watching every ripple. His brother rolls his eyes. His nephew Billy tugs at his shorts and asks what he really saw. He tells the boy about Cthulhu — the cosmic sleeper beneath the ocean, and the smaller thing that found a path inland to this lake — then holds a hot dog out over the surface. A tentacled face breaks the water without a sound, wraps a slick arm around Billy's hand, takes the hot dog, belches, and sinks back into the dark. Billy has his proof now. So does the man nobody believed. One day Billy will be the crazy uncle too, and he'll have earned it.
