How to stop scrolling. Start from where you are. Recognize what is a systemic issue. Practice "deciding" with intention when scrolling. Practice staying focused and catching yourself when you get distracted on your phone. Decouple your association of "dopamine" with "scrolling. Practice the standard addiction coping strategies: Make the desired habits more accessible + attractive. Make the habit you'd like to change less attractive + accessible. Practice mindful breathing work while you scroll. Practice ENGAGING with what you consume, instead of mindlessly consuming. Remember problem isn't the dopamine, it's typically the source... so make the sources you'd rather engage with more accessible + attractive for yourself. You don't have to climb out of the hole today - but you can celebrate the fact that you finally stopped digging. Watch the Newel of Knowledge video " SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!) Why would you want to disconnect from your joy, when trying to restore your sense of joy? You can't go on a T-break for pleasure. Instead, focus on the modifying the way you get your pleasure, instead of eliminating the pleasure itself. Dopamine is just one neurotransmitter responsible for our sense of pleasure + joy. We can't and shouldn't want to detox our dopamine levels. Dopamine is essential to motivating us to do everything from moving our bodies, to sleeping properly. This is why people with dopamine issues, depression, ADHD, etc. often struggle with physical and executive functioning. The problem isn't the dopamine, it's typically the source. I've been working on my relationship with my phone, on and off, for years. Sometimes, I use it as a tool. Sometimes, it feels like it's using me as a tool. Genuine + deeply rooted ad fatigue, traumatic events sprung upon me, most content is some form of engagement/rage/anxiety/fear bait, brain rot + ai slop, trolls + bot accounts. People associate the feeling of feeling the most alive when they’re laughing and playing and goofing off. People feel the most connected with their purpose and life and future and desire to make the world a better place, when they are connected to joy + their ability to have fun once in a while. But for some reason, as we get older - we make less and less time for play. We find it frivolous and silly and a waste of time... but that means some us have lost our joie de vivre because we forgot how to play. Read The Cleveland Clinic's description of Anhedonia . 1633 || analyzing the fun out of it
Dec 7, 2025·—

I overthink things that don't require second thought. I suck the fun out of joyful activities by worrying about doing it "correctly" or "perfectly" or performing "well enough to not embarrass myself" yet... even when there is no audience, I find myself performing. The expectations take away the true joy that comes from "creating" and "play" and "love" and "fun" and I'm trying to pay attention to this tendency so I can sit with the discomfort of not knowing if I will do a good job or not, but committing anyway. We love answers. We love conclusions. We tend to steer clear of open ended problems and tasks, because of this. But there are so many things that leave us with open ended problems that we will never be able to solve. Learning to tolerate that discomfort is an important skill to practice. The "right" answers don't exist. Let go of your "need" to know. Embrace the wholeness of the human experience; which means, we must learn to embrace the discomfort of wondering. 1631 || are you becoming the morality police?

have been trying to stop thinking of every single decision I make as some deep moral test. Every time I stay in the shower a little too long, or support a shitty company, or buy a product wrapped in single use plastic, isn’t a condemnation of all of my character. I am not going to hell. I am not broken. I am not a piece of shit. I am a human being, set up to fail, but doing my best any-damn-way. It’s not your job to save the world, but don’t let yourself forget how fulfilling and important it can be to inconvenience yourself, on behalf of love, when the time is right. I try to only focus on doing the next, right thing. Which, naturally, will be based on the context, the situation, the energy, the capacity of everyone involved, etc. The key is balance and discretion, which I will call: alignment. 1630 || the swiss cheese method
Dec 4, 2025·—
—
I have complex feelings about our personal responsibility. As we know the richest 1% cause more climate damage than over half of humanity. 57 companies are linked to 80% of greenhouse emissions, but our society has pushed us into the thinking its ALL our personal responsibility OR it's not at all. But all or nothing thinking is counter-productive and self-defeating. Instead think of every single imperfect (but inspired) action as a slice of swiss cheese. Sure, some harms may still make their way through the holes. But the more slices you stack on top of each other, the less those holes line up. And eventually, you create a pretty impenetrable block of actions that remind you that the holes were not a problem to begin with. Imperfect action > no action. 1621 || finding purpose at an all you can eat buffet
Nov 25, 2025·—
—
Finding your purpose in life is like finding your favorite food at a brand new "all you can eat" buffet. You arrive hungry and excited, and everything looks pretty delicious. You try to fit a little bit of everything on your plate. You try tiny nibbles and some disappoint. Others surprise. Others are what you expect. And when it’s time to go back up and try new things you know a littttle more and lose a lil initial excitement so you grab a lil of the things you missed the first time and so on. You keep tasting and trying. And you get pickier as you go. Recognize what isn’t salted enough for you. What isn’t spicy enough. What’s too spicy. You get more of what works and less of what doesn’t. Until eventually you get a full plate of all the things you love. When you eventually get hungry again and return to the buffet line? You’ll know. But you can’t be mad you didn’t know on your first plate. Sure, you technically "wasted" room on the plate that could’ve been more mashed potato or whatever but you didn’t know you liked the potato that much and if you started with a big plate of mash you’d be so jealous everyone else took a bite of something you hadn’t tried yet. Now you know. So when you go and get the cake you know you love the most, and return to the table to find your mom loving her portion of the cobbler, you’ve already tried it yourself. You don’t resent her for having cobbler you recognize you can get up at any time and get some. But right now you chose cake. And you know, you can always change it up for yourself in the future. The buffet of life is abundant. Don't get caught up in counting calories. Don't get caught up worrying about making the best choice. Don't get caught up optimizing your perfect meal. Instead, try things. Get curious... and then get picky. Never forget: you have so many options. Try Huel with 15% OFF for New Customers today using code MYDB at https://huel.com/mydb . Some of us don’t engage with the rest of the world anymore not because the rest of the world sucks any more than it always has - but because you have built an intolerance for the world where you are not the dictator. As Siece Campbell put it, “your algorithm worships you. You are the only one who lives inside this tiny box, let’s say you’re spending 7+ hours on your phone every day, well those are hours that we used to spend in a reality in a world that didn’t revolve around you.” We should all be worried about the rise of selfishness as a society because of an increase in addiction to convenience, isolation, comfort, and personal pleasure. She basically posits that we’re becoming so insulated from society that we’re becoming intolerant of the things that can actually bring us long term pleasure. SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!) The brain’s main goal is to protect us, so when we ask it to do anything new (particularly if you are neurodivergent) it signals to the brain that there may be danger lurking - so it refuses to do it, because it believes that is what keeps us safe. Many brains looks at all new tasks like a hot stove. So how do we manage this? According to kdimerc we can: Remove all unnecessary stoves. Look at the task objectively and ask yourself, “is this task really necessary or important?” If it’s not - take it off the burner completely, for now. Turn off the stove, if you are able to! This will be different for everyone, but it’s typically the things I suggest on this podcast to help you get motivated. Things like body doubling, brain hacks, pairing actions with other triggers, like this podcast, or songs, therapy and medication may help to turn off, or at least, turn down the heat on these stoves. Get really good at touching hot stoves. Like we have been discussing recently on the podcast, building your tolerance for distress is seemingly less and less optional at this point. But unfortunately there will be times where you can’t ignore a task, and you can’t make it less daunting, so you just have to power through the dread and do it anyway. While you may not be able to control your motivation to do a daunting task, you can control your mindset around it. You can come to accept the dread as part of the process.
