I recently had a fascinating conversation with Tracy Macdonald , a woman whose journey took her from the corporate world into one of the most elite and demanding organizations in the world: the U.S. Secret Service. From “Silence of the Lambs” to a Real-Life Agent Tracy’s path to law enforcement wasn’t typical. She was a “petite female” from a conservative Southern home working in banking when inspiration struck in an unlikely form: Jodie Foster’s character in “Silence of the Lambs.” It was the first time she had seen a female federal agent on the big screen, and she wanted to be her. While the FBI’s crime scenes weren’t a fit, the Secret Service, with its focus on financial crime and protection, felt right. The opportunity crystalized after 9/11, when agents came to her bank and noted their need for women with credit card experience and language skills—Tracy spoke French.
