Who Is Calling Illinois’ Defense? Bielema Isn’t Saying | Illini Podcast
Illinois football has undergone a stunning defensive change just four games into the season, with defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck parting ways with the program. On this episode of Talk Illini, Sunny Verma is joined by Orange and Blue News editor and publisher Doug Buschon to break down what went wrong with the Illinois defense, why the Bobby Hauck experiment ended so quickly and where Bret Bielema and the Fighting Illini go from here.Sunny and Doug discuss whether Illinois' problems were really caused by the 3-3-5 defense or whether bigger issues involving personnel, communication, game planning and execution ultimately doomed the experiment. They also examine:- Why Hauck's departure came after only four games- Whether Bret Bielema deserves some of the blame- Who could take over defensive play-calling duties- Roger Cooper, Ronnie Bradford and other possibilities- Whether Illinois will continue using the 3-3-5- Why simplifying the defense could help- Whether Bielema could call defensive plays himself- Why Purdue has become a must-win game- What this change means for the rest of Illinois' seasonDoug also explains why he believes Illinois can still salvage the season despite a 2-2 start, particularly with Purdue and Michigan State coming up next.Subscribe to Talk Illini for Illinois football and basketball coverage throughout the season.I-L-L!--------------------------Join the Talk Illini Discord! https://discord.gg/MpeUG8ExhReach out to [email protected] for business inquiries!--------------------------"Talk Illini" is your go-to source for all things Illinois Fighting Illini, hosted by Sunny Verma in partnership with Orange and Blue News and On3.
