As we have been studying chapter 5, it is becoming quite clear that Jesus was stating that He and the Father are equal – they are of one mind, have perfect harmony, and are of the same essence. In today’s passage, we read that Jesus states that He is the Judge, and as we know from Genesis and Psalms, God is the Judge of the earth. So once again, Jesus points out His equality with the Father and that they both shall receive honor. But Jesus also gives us a beautiful promise and a pardon from our judgement. A lot of Christians believe that every illness is due to some uncommitted sin in one’s life and God will not heal them until they have confessed that sin. Is this true? Jesus was not just a wise teacher or a prophet, He was, and is, the Son of God. In today’s passage we see Jesus defending this claim. His equality with God is equal in person, works, and even power to raise people from the dead. He can do all things that the Father can do and cannot do what the Father cannot do – sin. God, and therefore Jesus, cannot do anything that would go against their character of being pure and holy. Some people struggle with the accuracy of the New Testament, while some don’t believe it at all and treat it like another ancient mythological tale. Many critics say that Jesus never claimed to be God, but in today’s passage, He does indeed make that claim. Jesus is equal to God and He is the Son of God. We know this to be true by observing the reaction of the Jewish leaders and Jesus’ disciples and by studying the meaning of the ancient Eastern language. The past few lessons our studies have focused on the story of Jesus healing the lame man on the Sabbath, breaking the man-made laws of the Mishnah. In today’s passage, Jesus declares that God is always working and He Himself is God. God never ceases to work – He is constantly sustaining all of Creation. At first, the once lame man from Bethesda did not know who it was that had healed him. When the Jews asked him, he could not give them a name. But then Jesus meets him once again and warns him of the consequences of continuing to sin. The man then returns to the authorities to tell the Jewish leaders it had been Jesus who had healed him. Located in Jerusalem, the Temple Mount resides on what used to be known as Mount Moriah and over the years it has been a place of many historical events. Throughout history it has changed hands many times and today is a place of great importance to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Due to all the history that is stored there, laws were put in place that banned any excavating from taking place at the site. But in 1999, an illegal excavation began which involved the careless removal of piles of dirt from under the Temple Mount. To preserve the relics that were found there, The Temple Mount Sifting Project began. Since then, 85 percent of the debris has been sifted through, though much of it remains to be studied. Today’s passage marks a turning point and sets the tone for the rest of the Gospel account of John. From this point on, he will be explaining why the Jewish leaders hated Jesus. After healing the lame man by the pool, Jesus tells him to take up his bed and walk. According to the Law of the Pharisees, moving your mat was a disgrace and a sin against God and the Sabbath. In the last episode, we studied the findings from a variety of tests that were done on the Shroud of Turin to determine its authenticity. Now today, we challenge it against the most important source, the Word of God. If it does not line up with the Bible, then we know it can not be accurate. And it would appear upon first look of the accounts of the burial of Jesus that there is indeed an error between the four Gospels. But let’s see what the original language has to say. The Shroud of Turin – the most intensively studied artifact of all time. This ancient linen cloth depicts the image of a man who we can visibly see was beaten, bore a crown of thorns, scourged, stabbed, and clearly crucified Roman style. In today’s lesson we meet the Roman official whose son is terminally ill. Desperate, the man asks Jesus to heal his boy but is instead softly rebuked by Jesus. The official’s faith was shallow and was dependent on witnessing Jesus perform a miracle. But Jesus asks us to have a deeper faith than that. In Joshua 11, it is recorded that Joshua and the Israelites destroyed the city of Hazor, burning it to the ground. And according to the Law of Moses, they would have destroyed and burned all the pagan idols, not leaving one untouched. Now, the site of the ancient city has been excavated, and their findings have been remarkable. Amongst the old remains they found idols that had been smashed and clearly burned. It appears this lines up with what is written in the Bible.
