The Snallygaster: Maryland’s Winged, Tentacled Monster
In February 1909, the Valley Register of Middletown, Maryland, warned readers about a winged creature called the Snallygaster. The article named James Harding and Bill Gifferson in an alleged attack near the Middletown Valley and South Mountain. What survives is not a specimen or an official case file, but a sequence of newspaper pages. This episode follows the dated record from the February 12 launch story through the February 19 Ohio extension and the March 5 Emmitsburg escalation. It then returns to the Valley Register’s 1932 revival, its report naming Charles F. Main and Edward M. L. Lighter, a reader’s objection, an editorial ending, and a later reprint in Chestertown. The surviving material strongly supports a manufactured newspaper-folklore campaign, particularly through the Register’s December 2 editorial wording and later historical analysis. But the record also leaves a narrow question open: whether some unidentified animal report ever existed outside the articles that transformed the Snallygaster into Maryland legend. This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication. #CryptidFiles #Snallygaster #MiddletownValley #SouthMountain #ValleyRegister YES OR NO: Did the Valley Register create the Snallygaster legend??????
